Something Happened On The Day He Died

I woke up at 5 A.M. this morning, and I don’t know why. So, I decided to get online and see if it would make me fall asleep again. Unfortunately, one hour later, I was still up and, as I was checking my Facebook, the news announcing David Bowie‘s passing appeared on my timeline. I first thought about a page hijacking, or a bad publicity stunt, and really wanted to believe it was. It couldn’t be true, Lemmy, another rock legend left us a few weeks ago, they can’t all go away!… Unfortunately, after a while, I realized it was real…
602136_10151566794204742_2007810592_nAs far as I can remember, the “Ashes To Ashes” video is what first fascinated me in Bowie. I was around 8 and was heavily into KISS when I realized that somebody else was wearing as much make-up as them, and wore outfits as cool as theirs, but the whole atmosphere was weirder, almost scary. Perfect to arouse the curiosity of a child.
Then, a little later, I loved the “Let’s Dance” and “China Girl” videos that were everywhere on TV at that time. The image wasn’t the same anymore, but it was still intriguing, especially the moment when the girl in “China Girl” speaks with Bowie‘s voice, plus it has a bit of nakedness in it, something you’re normally not allowed to see when you’re a child.
I only got into the older stuff -especially the 70s glam albums- years later, in the late 90s, which made me realize how important his influence was on everything I loved, especially glam, goth, and punk.
Everyone has their own stories with David Bowie, and everyone has their favourite Bowies, that’s probably why it feels like we lost more than a great singer, or style icon.
Most of us knew that something was wrong these last years, but we heard so many rumours, we refused to believe anything after a while. The dark elements, and lyrics in “Blackstar” and “Lazarus” all make sense now. David Bowie managed to surprise us until his last breath, turning his death into art, the same way he killed Ziggy and his other stage characters.
I woke up at 5 A.M with no reason today. Well, I thought so…
